The material of the heat sink in profile radiators refers to the specific material used for the heat sink. Each material has different thermal conductivity properties, arranged from high to low as follows: silver, copper, aluminum, and steel. However, using silver for heat sinks would be too expensive, so the best option is to use copper. Although aluminum is much cheaper, its thermal conductivity is obviously not as good as that of copper (about only fifty percent of copper's conductivity).
The commonly used materials for heat sinks are copper and aluminum alloy, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Copper has good thermal conductivity but is relatively expensive, has higher processing difficulty, is too heavy (many pure copper heat sinks exceed the weight limit for CPUs), has a small heat capacity, and is prone to oxidation. Pure aluminum is too soft to be used directly; aluminum alloys are used to provide sufficient hardness. The advantage of aluminum alloys is their low cost and light weight, but their thermal conductivity is much worse than that of copper. Some heat sinks combine the strengths of both by embedding a copper plate in the base of the aluminum alloy heat sink.
